Step 1: Choose the right route

Rome free tours come in two flavors: Ancient Rome (Colosseum exterior, Forum, Palatine Hill views) and Baroque Rome (Pantheon, Trevi, Piazza Navona). Do one each day if you have 48 hours in the city.

Step 2: Book online in peak season

From May to September, booking 24 to 48 hours in advance is essential. Groups fill up by noon the day before. In low season (November to March) you can walk up 15 minutes before start time.

Step 3: Show up prepared

  • Walking shoes (Rome cobblestones are brutal on flat shoes)
  • 500 ml water bottle, Rome is hot from May
  • 15 EUR cash for the guide tip
  • Sun hat and sunscreen in summer
  • A light jacket in winter, open squares are cold

Step 4: Respect the guide

Rome guides compete hard for tips. Listen, ask questions, engage. A guide who sees you paying attention will often add detail that others do not get. Avoid side conversations in big groups, audio quality depends on everyone being quiet.
